cant comment on boot camp, but if you want to use vmware to rune visual studio 2008, you need to install microsoft Operating system say Windows xp on Vmware. Then you need to install visual studio 2008 on windows xp. You need to install windows xp on vmware because visual studio 2008 is not an operating system and thus cannot run by itself on vmware.
VMWARE actually facilitate you to run more than one operating system simultaneously. So with Vmware you can do some R&D, which will be risky if done on your original intallation. Other benefit of vmware is that you can save a copy of vmware files which stored the operating system and can later be reused in case the operating system, as i said above windows xp get corrupted or because of any other issue.
