Can A Virus Infect My System Through A Virtual Windows Xp Installation (vmware) ?

As per title. Or more generally, can I damage my actual Windows Xp in any way by messing with the one installed in VMware Workstation?

    the only possible way is that some files are getting infected that are usable on both configurations like shared folders for example. but you have to open the infected file on the real os first if that file is infected
