Using Vmware Player To Get Some Networking Experience?

I was reading in this book that you could get networking experience, i was wondering how to do it exactly? Do I just download the different Os’s then network them together? Dont really know how to do it exactly any help would be great. Ive already got the Vmware and now downloading ubuntu. What are some other good ones?
Also could I use already set up virtual machines that were made in virtual pc 2007?

    I think VM can read VPC images, but for your purpose, I think VPC may be your easier option, I use VPC in classrooms for students, , with the correct hardware, its actually a good product, but for main stream testing and real virtualization, I do use VMware
